Harold Fisk Recipient of Sanford Goldston Memorial Research Award!
Dr. Harold Fisk was chosen by the Ohio Cancer Research Associates to win the Sanford Goldston Memorial Research Award. This award is presented to a promising young investigator who best exemplifies the motto of the organization, "Give New Ideas a Chance". Harold received a two-year research grant from Ohio Cancer Research Associates, and after the first year, he leveraged the work to obtain an R01 from NIH. He will accept this award at the black tie optional gala to be held June 18 at the Hilton Easton. Congratulations to Harold!!!!

Undergraduate Major Places Third in Denman!
Jewell Gaulding, undergraduate major in the laboratory of Gustavo Leone, placed third in the 2009 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum for her research presentation of "Role of E1F1 in Hepatocellular Carcinoma" in the medicine category. Congratulations, Jewell!

Falkenthal Graduate Research Colloquium
Our 2009 Falkenthal Graduate Research Colloquium was held May 2, 2009. Dr. Robert Strausberg, Deputy Director and Group Leader of Genomic Medicine at the J. Craig Venter Institute was the keynote speaker. Dr. Strausberg, a graduate of OSU, oversees the operations of the J. Craig Ventor Institute and leads the institute's research program in human genomic medicine.

RNA Fellowship Awarded!

Congratulations to Anita Hopper Elected to AAAS Fellow
Dr. Anita Hopper, Professor and Chair, has been elected to the rank of AAAS Fellow. She is being honored for distinguished contributions to the fields of molecular genetics and cell biology, particularly for the elucidation of mechanisms that control the distribution of transfer RNA.

Welcome to new faculty members!
Dr. Jian-Qiu Wu joined the Department of Molecular Genetics and Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. Dr. Wu joins us from Yale University where he was a Postdoctoral Researcher for five years. His research includes the roles of signaling and cytoskeletal proteins in cell polarization and cell division.
Dr. Amanda Bird joined the Department of Molecular Genetics and the Department of Human Nutrition. Dr. Bird comes to OSU from the University of Utah where she was a Research Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral Researcher. Her research includes sensing of metal elements by eukaryotes; regulatory roles of novel RNAs and small proteins.
Dr. Maki Asano joined the Department of Molecular Genetics and the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry October 1, 2008. Dr. Asano was a Research Assistant Professor at Duke University Medical Center. Her research includes cell cycle regulation in metazoans during development.
Dr. Robin Wharton will join the Department of Molecular Genetics and the Depatment of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry in January 2009. Dr. Wharton comes from Duke University Medical Center where he has been a Professor and a Howard Hughes Investigator for the last 15 years.

Hongtao Jia (MCDB student in Helen Chamberlin's lab) received his Ph.D. Winter 2008. He has a position at OSU's Comprehensive Cancer Center as a Postdoctoral Researcher.
Sama Sleiman (MCDB student in Helen Chamberlin's lab) received her Ph.D. Winter 2008. She holds a postdoctoral researcher position at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
Kristin Armstrong (MG student in Helen Chamberlin's lab) received her Ph.D. Summer 2008. She is a postdoctoral researcher at Children's Hospital.
Ryan Johnson (MG student in Helen Chamberlin's lab) received his Ph.D. Summer 2008. He has a postdoctoral position at Children's Hospital.
Shih-Shih Chen (MG student in Christoph Plass' lab) received her Ph.D. Summer 2008. She holds a postdoctoral fellowship at Feinstein Institute.
Steven Justiniano (MG student in Amanda Simcox's lab) received his Ph.D. Summer 2008. He holds a postdoctoral researcher position at OSU's Pulmonary Division.
Tania Nayak (MG student from Berl Oakley's lab) received her Ph.D. Summer 2008. She now holds a position at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Litty Paul (MCDB student from Amanda Simcox's lab) received her Ph.D. Summer 2008. She is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Utah.
Joseph Stephan (MCDB student from Paul Herman's lab) received his Ph.D. Summer 2008. He now holds the position of Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Molecular Genetics, OSU.
Komudi Singh (MG student from Hay-Oak Park's lab) will receive her Ph.D. Autumn 2008. She has a position of Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Molecular Genetics, OSU.
